Vintage Basketball Cards OCTOBER 2003 NEWS

TODAY'S NEWS IS ON THE MAIN PAGE

New Additions

As a part of my redesign, I created initial pages for the S23s

My Website Sucks

Ok, albeit my site is the place to go for vintage basketball information I have realized in trying to upgrade it that ... well ... it sucks.  I'm going to make a large effort to including more set lists and pictures for everything.

GAI

           GAI's new website is up.  www.gacard.net .

Message Boards

I'm getting emails saying that my message boards are hard to post to.  I'll go searching for a new message board site.  If you know of a good one, let me know.

Nonresponsive emals

If you send me an email and I do not respond ... its not my fault.  Occasionally, I will be at work and read someone's email only to be swept away to Intellectual Property land (www.fishneave.com) and forget about the email.  If you send me an email and I don't respond ... send it to me again or just call my cell (on the About Me page).  I love to hear from / talk to other collectors.

New Additions

§    I added some new uncut sheets to the ... well .... uncut sheet section.  New Additions include 1972, 1975, and 1978 uncut sheets.

§    As you know, I am slowly going about redesigning the site.  Today, I made a page devoted to the 1899 Enamaline girl series.  I added a few paragraphs of information about the cards that you may not know about.

§    Wow, law school is really boring tonight.  I also added a new page ... a Rare 1970+ page in which I will include notable rarities from 1970 onward.

Mullen's theory appears to be right.  Too bad they are non-basketball.

1952 Royal Custard

I forgot who sent me this picture, but whoever did ... I owe you. As most of you know, people used to not know how the "blue" variation of the 1952 Royal Desserts came about.  I mean even during the National I would go up to some of the most reputable basketball dealers in the hobby and they would give me ... well ... bullshit.  One even told me that they heard that the blue variation was on the butterscotch flavor of pudding.  Now, I have, on multiple occasions, have given my theory on why we have blue variations and the above picture proves my theory even more.

My theory is that the blue variations were distributed on the Custard Flavor of the Royal Dessert packs.  Sports personalities could be found on the boxes of three different types of Royal products.  They were Jello, Pudding, and Custard.  Above you will note the front of a custard box, a blue variation which is the back of a custard box, and a black variation that is on the back of a pudding box (note the brown border).  Each box has 4 colors.  The colors are 1) no color (the color of the cardboard); 2) yellow; 3) red; and 4) the color of the text.  Above you will see that for the custard box, the color of the text is blue.  Royal probably had a 3 stage printing process at the time and making the text on the custard box black would have required 1) that an extra print stage be added for black; and 2) a more expensive process. Viola ... there you have it ... the above picture supports my initial analysis.  We know of a Pollard and a Mikan still on the box in a blue variation and they are both blue.  We have never seen one on a non-custard box.  The above pudding box with black/brown ink supports the theory.  The only problem is that the pudding box appears to be brown and the text is black.  Therefore the third color is red.  I need a picture of the front of the box to see how they made this work.

Which one is rarer?  It depends on how you look at it.  I have seen, as a whole, more black then blue.  Ratio?  I would say the ratio may be 5 to 1 or greater.  However, the only two "on-the-box" examples I know of are both the blue variation.  The above box is just another piece to the puzzle.  This is one of my "projects" so if you have any other information please send it to me.  Check out the 1952 Royal Dessert Page for more information including a picture of the album and advertisement (and some of the hockey cards).

Not Basketball, but still remarkable.

Hakes

There is a new Hakes auction.   www.hakes.com  Now, I was the high bidder on the 3 bread for energy cards ... i got outbid ... I don't know if I'll bid on them again.  I can see the auction ending at a good $1,500.  Damn ... maybe I will bid again.   Happy bidding everyone.

1976 Pistol's Super Socks Card

1976 SuperSocks Cards

These cards area apparently one of the 10 hardest sets of the 1970s.  Steve Taft is selling this card for $695.  First come, first served.  I know of someone that is going to snag it up for $695 soon if someone else doesn't grab it.

Mile High

There is a new Mile High Auction.  www.milehighcardco.com

WOW -- 1910 Hamilton King Pillow Case

Joe Orlando

Joe Orlando of PSA made a statement a few days ago that basically said that he was upset with the amount of rumors being generated with respect to PSA.  In his statement, he threatens to ban people from the PSA message boards that make such statements.  You can view his statements at www.psacard.com by simply going to "message boards" and then "PSA Registry Discussion."  Needless to say, I made a few posts criticizing Joe's remarks by stating that PSA should simply dispel the rumors instead of banning members.

Amazing Item That Was For Sale

The above pillow case was on ebay a few weeks ago.  Most of us, including myself, missed it.  The seller closed the auction early which means that someone probably gave him an offer he couldn't refuse.  However, the pillow case is easily worth $1,500-$2,000.  The seller had no idea what he had on his hands (he completely miscategorized it) which means that someone probably got a great deal on this pillowcase.  I now know of 4 pillowcases in existence.

Superior Sports Auction

Their newest auction just went online at www.superiorsports.com .  This auction had a ton of great basketball cards which are, like I mentioned last week, from Logoggs collection.

A message from Art to everyone

" A sad note for the followers of this site. It was reported today that
Ernie Calverly a star in the 40's passed away today from natural causes at the
age of 79. Ernie was a star at the University of Rhode Island leading the nation
in 1943 in scoring at 26.7 point per game (a huge amount for that era) and
the NIT MVP on the losing team in 1946 (Back when the NIT was the premier
tournament). He was one of the original NBL/NBAers playing for the Providence
Steamrollers in their only three years of  existance from 1946-49. He later coached
at his Alma Mater taking them twice to a NCAA berth. As Vintage collectors
know he graces a key card #1 in the 1948 Bowman set. On a personal note I find
it sad that he and others from that era do not get the recognition they deserve
while living for pioneering this great  PRO Sport. Hopefully Jeff's site and
a new found interest in Vintage Basketball will keep the memory of his and
others alive."

Next Sports Card Plus Auction

The man, the myth, the legend, Mike R. gave me a call and told me that Logogg is selling off his 1957 and 1961 sets in the next Sports Card Plus Auction (or was it Superior Sports).  Anyway, these top of the line sets (viewable from the set registry) will be broken up and sold.  WOW!!!

2 1971 Topps Trio Proof Cards.

Great Items on Sale

The ToppsVault is now auctioning off 1971 Topps Trio Proofs.  These are really cool.  Especially, since they are getting really collectible and I got a common (which is actually 2 proof cards) for $45.

There is a 1980 Topps Uncut Sheet on sale on ebay.

I'm Old

So, as of October 12th, I'm old.  I'm now 25 years old.  Son of a bitch.

Set Registry

Its almost time for the second Set Registry Awards.  You need to post your sets by October 31 in order to be eligible.

The Hobby

So the hobby is going pretty slow.  The only thing I've bought in the last few months is a Topps Trio Proof from the Toppsvault (a whole bunch of these are on sale now).  Any new news?  If so ... either email me or post to the message boards.

Sid Hertzberg

So this guy called me the other day.  Apparently, he is dating the daughter of Sid Hertzberg.  If you have anything related to him for sale.  Please shoot me an email.  Specifically, he requests

"I am looking for any Sidney (sonny) hertzberg cards. I
know of a 1948 bowman- im not sue of others. He was
the first captain of the knicks and also played with
the celtic and capitols..his career was from the late
40's to 1951. Id prefer the 1948 bowman in high graded
condition..but am basically looking for all cards in
all conditions...thx"
